You dONT UNDERSTAND, I had the title of bookworm in my family, I still hold claim to that title, but my family doubts my claim because when asked about what books I’ve been reading, I can’t say it. hOW DO I COME OUT AND SAY I’VE BEEN READING FANFICTION AND WRITING THE LAST FOUR YEARS WITHOUT GETTING MADE FUN FOR IT?
Say you have been reading unpublished/beginning authors online and if they ask more give vague answers about the plot and don’t give names. And you can say your doing writing exercises or short stories??? Worked with my family
Heh, that’s one way of wording it. And I’ve always been secretive with my writing, original or not, so my family has given up trying to ask what I’m writing for years now ^^”
My solution is to just be so confident and enthusiastic about it that no one dares to insult it. I prattle on and on if they let me, just like I would about any other story, and I try to communicate the joy of it. When they go: “Fanfiction? Why don’t you read actual books??” I have a line of rebuttals: “I already love the characters. Why not?”;
“But it’s so poorly written.” “Not all of it! Besides, it’s free! Written in spare time, full of love and sweat and tears. I’m gonna value the shit out of it.”
And most importantly “it makes me happy.” Those I care about enjoy my passions because I love them and the strangers who judge me can stay f-ing 3 feet away and deal.
When I started reading fanfic, no one understood. Now they roll their eyes fondly just like whenever I blabber about my interests and both my mom AND aunt read my work, AND they all agree that me working on my fanfic is “productive.”
You are what my anxious oh-god-what-if-people-will-hate-me self aspires to be, and I salute you.
alright i gotta say. re: jack black & antisemitism:
1. i’m seeing a lot of “his mom is jewish and his dad converted to judaism” oh so you mean jewish. what you’re meaning to say is his parents are jewish, both of them, they’re jewish
2. why are we on this whole thing again “born to jewish parents” “raised jewish” “of jewish descent” like sorry your cultural icon is A Jew with zero degrees of separation
